Some of my favourite quotes

Quotes are the stuff of my life. I don’t follow them to the letter (that’d be silly), but I do turn to them in hours of need.

Here are some of my favourite quotes:

Pardon the French, but I really like these two:

Ce qui embellit le désert, dit le petit prince, c’est qu’il cache un puits quelque part..

Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

J’ai un but auquel je vais. C’est ce qui fait ma force.

Emile Zola

You do not realise how true this is until you have experienced it yourself:

Enough negativity for now,

Life is short. Life is sweet. Life is all that matters.

A truck driver whose path I crossed while working at Eurostar in 2012
– one of those encounters you hope never to forget…

The following is especially close to my heart. The best definition of love I have come across:

Love is the very difficult understanding that something other than yourself is real.

Iris Murdoch

This for when I don’t feel like doing:

In the same self-motivational vein:

The buck stops here.

(Apparently) popularised by U.S. President Harry S. Truman

Three words I repeat to myself often, especially when I am writing:

Less is more.

Robert Browning (again, according to Wikipedia)

Now for some humour:

Theory is when nothing works and you know why…

practice is when things work and you don’t know why.

We combined theory with practice 🙂

nothing works and we don’t know why 🙂

Scrawled on the inside cover of a second-hand Law book in my possession

Not technically a quote, but I totally get this:

Bookish-Problem-Mourning

This one because I cannot resist poking fun at classical economists:

If you add up a huge number of flat lines, you will get one very long flat line.

Steve Keen from Debunking Economics (a book all aspiring economists should read)

List to be added to as I come across more inspiring words and ideas. 🙂
